Dear Friends of the Roxbury Bandshell:

We can enjoy the entertainment of today while we preserve yesterday's achievements for tomorrow's generations.

That thought sums up the reasons why the historic Roxbury Bandshell is important to the Johnstown community. And it is the reason why I am writing this appeal to you.

As President of the Roxbury Bandshell Preservation Alliance, I am pleased to announce that the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission has approved a grant of $85,000 to help us finish interior restoration work and the exterior pointing of mortar at the Bandshell in Roxbury Park. The application for the funding was made through the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority.

There are conditions, however. In order to receive the money, we must match the $85,000 with local contributions.

The alliance has a 20-year lease with the City of Johnstown because our volunteers and friends were successful in restoring the roof and cleaning up the Bandshell and the surrounding area as well as sponsoring numerous entertainment events, such as the successful summer concert series. We proved to the city that could make it work.

The Bandshell was erected as a WPA project to help Johnstown area residents recover from the Great Depression of the 1930s. It is our history. That's why it is important to all of us to preserve yesterday's achievement--the building of the Bandshell—for us to enjoy today. We never again can let it fall into ruin as we did over the past few decades.

With the $85,000 in the state grant plus $85,000 we hope to raise through local donations, we can enjoy a renovated, delightful Bandshell and so will those who are to follow us.

Please become a Friend of the Bandshell and send us your donation today online using teh below donate button or via postal mail using the below address.
