Jerry Intihar is a well-known musician from Western Pennsylvania. Jerry
performs a variety of music including Slovenian, Croatian, Polish, German,
Slovak, and other ethnic selections. He also features a variety of country
music, American standards, oldies, and Buffett-style music. He has been playing
for 56 years. During that time, he has played with Eddie and the Slovenes,
Frankie Yankovic (America's Polka King), Walter Ostanek (Canada's Polka King),
Joey Miskulin (from the group Riders in the Sky), Bobby Vinton, Myron
Floren, and many other artists.
Jerry started playing the accordion at age eight. His mother originally wanted
him to take up the tamburitza, but his dad already had him hooked on the
accordion. In a few months he started playing at his school where he was a big
hit. He joined his first band when he was only 13 called Slovene Polka Chaps
and in a couple years, he joined the Harmony Tunes. One of his most successful
moves was when he decided to play for Eddie and the Slovenes in 1960. With this
band, he traveled across the country and recorded several albums with Eddie.
Twelve years later, Jerry eventually formed his own band, the Jerry Intihar
Band. This is his present day band in which he plays for many events including
festivals, dances, parties, anniversaries, and weddings. Through the years his
band has changed. The original members were Larry Demetro, Sr. and the late Tony
Zupanchick, Sr. Now, his band members include Larry (Bud) Demetro, Jr, Steve
Kucenski, Ben Sakmar (his grandson), and Tony Zupanchic. In 1993, the Jerry
Intihar Band won a survey conducted by Johnstown's Tribune-Democrat for "Simply
the Best" entertainer. He has recorded several albums and has been featured with
many other polka artists. |
